On August 19, 2015 – TIJ hosted Seminar on “Diversion of Cases and Offenders”
The Seminar on “Diversion of Cases and Offenders” focused on causes, effects and solutions of over-criminalize. One of the major reason of overcrowding in prisons is the trial in Thailand mainly focused on the "prison" and still lack of alternative measures to treat the offenders, especially in the case of drug offenses.
So this seminar aims to be a forum for the Thai criminal justice leaders and officials from educational institution, public sector and a civil society especially in Thailand, shared and exchanged experiences and knowledge about Diversion of Cases and Offenders.
Dr.Nathee Chitsawang, Deputy Executive Director of TIJ, gave an opening remarks and participated as a panelist in the third session. The panel discussion including 3 sessions including Criminal Justice in Thailand and over-criminalize, The problem of Court Congestion and The problem of Prison Overcrowding.
The participants of the seminar including Thai experts such as prosecutors, professors, Judge, Police, Officials from Office of the Attorney General and the key speakers including lecturers from Chulalongkorn University, Researchers from Thailand Development Research Institute (TDRI) and Public Prosecutor attached to the Office of the Attorney General.
TIJ looking forward to supporting information and ideas to improve and the criminal justice system in Thailand. Especially, supporting the knowledge to investing in long-term strategies for crime prevention and reduction and reducing high rates of pre-trial detention by improving access to justice with the Alternative Dispute Resolutions.
