“Offending is not the be all and end all of a woman’s life. They can journey through the criminal justice system with dignity and respect, as guaranteed by the Bangkok Rules and other relevant international standards and norms. In this regard, TIJ has been and will continue to be a partner to Senior Correctional Staff in the ASEAN Region in this long journey to ensure that they are given a second chance when they return to society,” Dr. Phiset Sa-Ardyen, the Executive Director of TIJ said.
From 13th to 23rd August 2024, Thailand Institute of Justice (TIJ) is organizing The 5th Training on the Management of Women Prisoners for Senior Correctional Staff in the ASEAN Region (The Bangkok Rules Training). The training provides knowledge related to international standards and norms on the treatment of prisoners such as the Bangkok Rules and an in-depth understanding of the gender-sensitive needs of women prisoners.
The training covers 12 modules including Introduction of the Bangkok Rules; Gender sensitive prison management; Special categories; Pregnant women, mothers and dependent children in prison; Allocation, admission and classification; The safety of women prisoners; Security and order in women’s prison; Prisoner rehabilitation; Contact with the outside world; Prison staff/ leadership and empowerment; Healthcare and trauma-informed care; Reintegration.
The total of 27 officers from across the region learn through a mix of lectures, interactive group activities and prison visit. As an output of the training, the participants have the opportunity to develop a group action plan and present them later on.
