October 8 - 9, 2015 – TIJ hosted Expert Group Meeting on the Training Modules for Correctional Staff and Training of Trainers on the Management of Women Prisoners in the ASEAN Region. And the Expert Roundtable Meeting on “The 5th Anniversary of the Bangkok Rules: International Perspectives on Good Practices and Lessons Learned”.
For the Expert Group Meeting on the Training Modules for Correctional Staff and Training of Trainers on the Management of Women Prisoners in the ASEAN Region which hosted in the morning aims to Promote awareness and building capacity of correctional officers in the various countries. And create an understanding of the basic needs and vulnerability of the female offenders in the criminal justice.
Dr.Kittipong Kittayarak gave and opening remarks in the Expert Group Meeting and Ms.Tomris Atabay, Advisor of TIJ, has trained Modules for Policymaker and Correctional Staff in the ASEAN Region such as Mr.Mao Sophearom, Deputy Director from MOI in Combodia, Mr.U Win Naing Lin, Deputy Director from Prison Department in Myanmar etc. and Head of International Organizations such as Dr.Terutoshi Yamashita, Director of UNAFEI, Ms.Abigali Booth, Head of Asia Unit, and Mr.Sven Pfeiffer, Officer in UNODC etc.
Moreover, TIJ also hosted the Expert Roundtable Meeting on “The 5th Anniversary of the Bangkok Rules: International Perspectives on Good Practices and Lessons Learned” which hosted in the afternoon aims to gain and share international perspectives on recent trends and patterns including success and challenges faced by countries around the world in the treatment and management of women prisoners and the implementation of the Bangkok rules.
Her Royal Highness Princess Bajrakitiyabha Mahidol, Chair of the Special Advisory Board to TIJ provided a keynote speech during the opening ceremony of the Expert Roundtable Meeting on “The 5th Anniversary of the Bangkok Rules: International Perspectives on Good Practices and Lessons Learned” and also participated as a panelist in the first panel discussion on "International trends and challenges in implementing the Bangkok Rules, which moderated by Dr.Kittipong Kittayarak, Executive Director of TIJ.
More than 150 people paticipated in the meeting, including international organizations such as PNIs, INGOs, NGO, Ambassy and Criminal Justice Organizations in Thailand.
TIJ sincerely hope that, The Expert Group Meeting and the Expert Roundtable Meeting would identify the way in which the role of international organizations as well as non-profit organizations can be strengthened and the possible areas of cooperation among governmental agencies and non-governmental organizations in enhancing gender sensitivity in the management of women prisoners and criminal justice nationally and internationally.
