TIJ-UNDP signed an MoU to promote Innovation for Justice System.

Thailand Institute of Justice (TIJ) continuously thrives to enhance the justice system in Thailand, and the region. With a strong belief that everyone deserves equal access to justice, TIJ recognizes the importance of and drives to promote multi-sectoral collaboration and people-centered solutions. Moreover, in doing so, TIJ also encourages the justice system to pursue the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and aim for continuous improvement. Therefore, ever since its establishment in 2011, TIJ has been playing an important role to engage partners from every sector, both within and outside the system, to cross-collaborate and bring new solutions to contribute to a sustainable and reliable justice system.

9th June 2022 marks another significant achievement on TIJ’s journey toward a people-centered justice with sustainable development. TIJ and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) signed a memorandum of understanding to establish a framework to facilitate and strengthen collaboration between the parties, on a non-exclusive basis, in areas of common interests. For example, the parties will jointly strengthen the rule of law in Thailand through scaling innovative tools and frameworks in policy-making and justice-related issues, as well as exploring and applying the social impact measurement tools and communicating impact to the wider community. Furthermore, the parties will utilize the ‘Justice Innovation District’, located at the new TIJ building on Chaengwattana Rd, to organize activities focused on knowledge exchanges on the SDGs, with a focus on justice and the rule of law.

“We are delighted to join forces with the organization with similar goals of strengthening the rule of law through scaling, exploring, and applying innovative tools to empower and connect key actors and build a stronger ecosystem for justice innovation to grow efficiently and sustainably in Thailand and the region. With the support from UNDP, we are confident that we will be able to engage a wider audience beyond the traditional justice system and bring more people along the journey towards sustainable development. This partnership will be the catalyst that grooms us to become an enabler of justice innovation in Thailand, ASEAN, and the Asia Pacific region,” remarked Dr.Phiset Sa-ardyen, TIJ Executive Director.

“I find TIJ a great partner and we still have so much to learn, and so much to discuss. I think there is a lot of expectation in the society today in Thailand and beyond. Organizations that benefit from the trust and respect, like TIJ and UNDP, have the responsibility of delivering the expectation that is good for us and society.  I hope that the MoU would bring higher grounds for collaboration.” Renaud Meyer, UNDP Resident Representative for Thailand, said.

Since 2021, the Justice Innovation Unit of TIJ has been working closely with UNDP to launch a workshop on “Policy and Justice Innovation Tools for Educators.” The workshop was in collaboration with Thailand Policy Lab (TP Lab), established by UNDP and the Office of the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC), to stage an online platform to provide innovative policy-making tools with the aim to improve Thailand’s policymaking to become more efficient, effective, and responsive. The workshop was deemed successful as it welcomed more than 80 attendees who exchanged views and shared experiences on new teaching strategies to groom the next generations on tackling social and justice problems through policymaking.
